Agnes Anne Bowen, born March 9, 1914 in Mills River, North Carolina died March 21, 2007 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Anne was one of nine children born to George and Roxy Bowen, two of whom remain: her sister, Rachel Harding, of Alabama and brother, JE Bowen, of North Carolina. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Beverly Lord of Lacey, Washington who served as her representative and power of attorney. She was predeceased by brothers George, James and Thomas and sisters Gaitha, Gertha and Nell.

Anne’s family moved from Mills River to Brevard during her childhood and she finished high school there. On March 4, 1933 she married Sam Kent. After sixty-eight wonderful years together, Anne said good-bye to Sam when he passed away on February 18, 2001.

Anne and Sam shared a love of the outdoors and spent endless hours hiking most every trail in their beloved Blue Ridges as well as every other east coast mountain range and even some trails in the California’s Sierras. They were life long members of the Carolina Mountain Club. Anne was also a great supporter of Sam’s other passion; bass fishing. Although, she did insist that his fly-tying hobby be restricted to the basement or the garage since the workbench did not remain as tidy as her standards required.

Anne had passions of her own. She was an expert bridge player and enjoyed many years teaching others the game and competing in bridge tournaments. She contributed eleven years of service to the Park Ridge Hospital Auxiliary and missed her time there when she had to retire due to her own health issues.

After enjoying many years in their Asheville home in Oak Forest, Sam and Anne joined other early residents in Heritage Hills in 1986. Upon moving to Hendersonville they became faithful members of First Presbyterian Church where Anne contributed many hours to nursery care as well as other projects.

She remained in her cottage in the Hills after Sam’s death until her declining health precipitated a move to Heritage Lodge in May, 2005. She was a treasure to her caregivers and friends at the Lodge for her sunny disposition and delightful sense of humor. She remained in the kind and loving care of Heritage Lodge staff until the end. We thank Four Seasons Hospice staff as well as the care giving community at Heritage Lodge and Heritage Hills for making the final stage of Anne’s journey so rich and full of joy.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
