Mary Ann McLaurin Deen, 84, passed away June 21, 2020, in Lakeway, Texas, in the presence of her family. A private memorial service for immediate family will be held initially, with a public celebration of life at a later date.
She was born May 29, 1936, in Jonesboro, Louisiana, to the late Willie Hugh and Odessa McLaurin. Mary Ann grew up in Ruston, Louisiana, where she graduated from Ruston High School in 1954. She attended Louisiana State University beginning in 1954, where she joined and ultimately became president of the Pi Phi Sorority. Mary Ann met the love of her life, Gordon Holmes Deen, while attending LSU. She graduated from Louisiana State University in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in music.
She and Gordon were married Aug. 9, 1958, and subsequently moved to New Orleans, where she taught music while he attended Tulane Medical School. Their oldest son, Gordon Jr., was born during their time in New Orleans. Following Gordon's completion of medical school, they transitioned through Shreveport, Louisiana, where son, Geoffrey, was born, and on to Houston, Texas, while Gordon completed his medical residency and internship.
Gordon was then drafted by the Army, and the family moved to Fort Lewis, Washington, before Gordon was sent to Vietnam as a field surgeon for a year. Mary Ann and her young family moved back to Ruston, Louisiana, while Gordon completed his military service. During this time, youngest son Richard was born. Upon Gordon's return, they moved to Ada, where he began his medical career, and Mary Ann immediately immersed herself in community service. She served 30 years as the organist and music director for First Christian Church of Ada. She served on the Ada School Board as well as the board of First National Bank of Ada. Mary Ann was instrumental in helping establish the Ada Arts and Heritage Center, was president of the Oklahoma Medical Alliance, was a beloved Den Mother and even hosted a tea for Miss America annually, all while raising her three sons.
Following Gordon's retirement from practicing medicine, he and Mary Ann moved to Lakeway, Texas, and established a new church home at Lakeway Church. She enjoyed her years in Lakeway, continuing her involvement with her family and their many friends.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Gordon Holmes Deen; sons and their spouses, Gordon Deen Jr. and Jenny of Austin, Texas, Geoffrey Deen and Carolyn of Flower Mound, Texas and Richard Deen and Mindy of Ardmore; her eight grandchildren and their spouses, Alex Deen, Austin Deen and Sarah, Jackson Deen, Kiely Deen, Madison Deen and fiancé Nathan Jolliff, Trevor Deen and Triston Deen, Sydney Deen; and her sister, Elizabeth Dyson, and her husband, Gerry, of Birmingham, Alabama.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Jean Allen, of Ruston, Louisiana.
