Deceased Name: Emma Levaun Van Orman Zollinger LOGAN, Utah ­ Emma Levaun Van Orman Zollinger, 100, passed away at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a short illness incident to age. She was the oldest known resident of Providence, Utah, having lived in three different centuries.
She was born in a log cabin in Bennington, Idaho, on May 3, 1899, to Ransom Abraham and Minnie Malmberg Van Orman. At age five, her family was sent by the LDS Church to Taber, Alberta, Canada to settle the area. After attending business college in Canada, she came to Logan to work. She married Oliver Herman Zollinger of Providence, Utah, in the Cardston, Alberta, Temple on July 17, 1929. He preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1958.
At a young age, she studied elocution, and her life was filled with service giving readings, often in dialect. She continued giving her readings, even in her 100th year, and was well-known throughout the community for her wit and humor. She had also directed and acted in many plays and road shows for both church and community. She worked at CC Anderson's, Allen's Lady Store, Dupler's, The Bon Marche and others. She was also a certified corset fitter. She belonged to the Daughters of the Pioneers and the Women's Professional Business Association of Logan. She was honored as Providence's Outstanding Citizen in 1984 by the Lion's Club. After retirement, she enjoyed her friends at the Senior Citizen Center and weekly trips to the temple.
She is survived by three children, Don (Marilyn) Zollinger, Chandler, Ariz., Van (Helen) Zollinger, Providence, Utah, and Rosalind (Henry) Astle, Rancho Cordova, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. Levaun was the last surviving member of 12 children, nine of whom grew to adulthood. Their names were: Margaret Johnson Lee, Helma Barton, Maretta Cook, Herschel Van Orman, Blanche Vernon, Jennie Vance and Wilford Van Orman.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 6, at noon at the Providence 1st Ward chapel, located at 420 W. 100 North in Providence, with Bishop Kelly Rindlisbacher conducting. The viewing will be Sunday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, located at 34 E. Center St. in Logan, and also Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Providence 1st Ward preceding the funeral.
