Funeral Saturday for Mrs. Vera Schmidt

Mrs. Paul (Vera) Schmidt, longtime Remsen resident, died Wednesday, February 21, at Happy Siesta nursing home here at the age of 79. She had been in failing health for about one year.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church here. Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. P. Schultes officiated, and burial was in the parish cemetery.

She was born December 2, 1893, at Salem, South Dakota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brune. She came to Remsen at the age of 17 and was a telephone operator at West Iowa Telephone Co. for many years.

Her marriage to Paul Schmidt took place June 3, 1912, at Remsen [Actually in Sioux City]. Mr. Schmidt died three years ago.

She was a member of the Christian Mothers Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Henry (Lorraine) Brandes of Remsen; four sons, Omar of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Robert of Des Moines, Iowa, Fred of Everly, Iowa, and Ronald of Munster, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Mary Maiers of Salem, South Dakota; and two brothers, William Brune of Long Beach, California, and Ben Brune of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, and one sister.

Casket bearers were James Morgan, James Wagner, Lewis Treinen, Ray Tritz, Clifford Dorr, and Tom Niggeling.

The Fisch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
