William was the first born child of Stephen and Margaret "PollY' Pool/Pettypool Talley. He was born in Laurens Co., S.C. abt. 1815. Stephen moved his family from S.C. to Oostanaula, Gordon Co., Ga. William came to Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., Tn. abt. 1852. He was a farmer and carpenter. William owned two farms. One was next to his brother Berry's near Chickamauga Station. The Chickamauga Creek ran through Berry's property. The other was near Tyner Station in Tynerville which later became Tyner. In September of 1863 William headed north to Nashville to join the Union Army. He enlisted on Oct. 5, 1863. Stephen J. Talley, the oldest son of Berry, arrived in Nashville shortly after and enlisted on Oct. 21, 1863. They were both mustered in on Oct. 26, 1863 in Co. B 10th Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. By February 1864 Stephen was sick in a Nashville hospital with Typhoid Pnumonia. He died Feb. 19, 1864 and is buried in a veterans cemetery in Nashville. William was mustered out on August. 1, 1865 at the end of the war. He never married and lived his later years with his brother Berry.
