Obituary for Aileen DeHamer

Aileen DeHamer, 95, of Cedar, went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ on June 23, 2020. She was born December 23, 1924, in White City, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ida Pearl Mott Thomas. She married the love of her life, Dwight DeHamer on September 9, 1945 at Figuroa Church. To this union five sons were born. Dwight and Aileen worked hard to raise their children to know the Bible and Jesus Christ by being faithful to the church.

Aileen loved to cook, sew, and make quilts. Aileen loved to teach children and she earned her master's degree in Education from Drake University. She taught handicapped children in Keokuk County and southeast Iowa for many years. She taught and was a substitute for 40 years. She loved helping others. She enjoyed playing hymns at church and at home. She was a faithful member of the Ottumwa Baptist Temple.

Her family includes her sons, Don (Susan) DeHamer, Hans DeHamer, Daniel (Carmen) DeHamer, Steve (Carolyn) DeHamer; five grandchildren, Hans (Viki) DeHamer, Jr., Mary Beth (Ben), Jessica (Adam), Evan and Suzanna; and five great grandchildren.

Aileen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dwight; a son Dale DeHamer; two brothers, Keith Thomas and Dale Thomas; and a granddaughter Melinda.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa with Pastor Travis Decker officiating. Burial will follow services in the Bethel Cemetery in Mahaska County. According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event. The funeral service will be live streamed at the Bates Funeral Home's YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 30, 2020 beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont with the family present to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Ottumwa Baptist Temple.
