Vernon F. Herting, 67, of Cassville, Wis., formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at home, with his family at his side.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church adjacent to Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3966 Asbury Road, Dubuque, with the Rev. Melissa Warren Spoerl officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

He was born on Aug. 26, 1940, in Dubuque, son of Michael and Leona (Roling) Herting. He married Carol Ann Flogel on May 11, 1963, in St. Catherine, Iowa.

Mr. Herting was a heavy equipment operator for most of his life, but in 1990, he and his wife started Big H Campground outside of Cassville.

To many of his friends and all his family, he was known as "Uncle Vern," the leader. He had always been strong, young minded, and was always there to lend a hand to anybody who needed it.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing and most of all hanging around the campground with his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann, of Cassville; four children, Patricia (Steve) Dischler, of Sauk City, Sue Ogden, of Hattiesburg, Miss., Karen (Mark) Skorczewski, of Lodi, and Jane (Mike) Millen, of Longwood, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Joe, Rachel, Amanda, Michael, Nicolette, Tyler, Luke and Ryan; and eight brothers and sisters, Anita (John) Gilles, Nancy (Ken) Steffen, Mary (Buzz) Duschen and Judith Herting, all of Dubuque, Emil (Darleen) Herting, of Sherrill, Iowa, Loras (Claire) Herting, of Maquoketa, Iowa, Janet (John) Neyens, of Marion, Iowa, and Linda (David) Mizaur, of Fyre Lake, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim and Earl Herting; and two sisters, Luetta Herting and Norma (Walter) Krug.
