Per the book the Maxey’s of Virginia. George was born in 1822 in Indiana however he was 78 when he died in California per those records and died in 1903 so it could be 1824. He married Elizabeth Foike in Fulton County, Indiana on January 12, 1845. They had four children (Dixon) Asa, Sylvestor, Frances and Mary. The 1850 census shows them living in Union Township, Fulton County, Indiana George, Elizabeth, and Dixon. For some reason Sylvestor does not appear on this census. Also, Georges mother Elizabeth was residing with family per the census of 1850. Sometime after 1853 and before 1860 his wife Elizabeth dies, and George parcels out his children to other people and goes to California in search of gold.
November 20, 1865, he joined the Mountaineer Infantry “E” 1st Battalion. It shows that he is living in Ukiah, California and lists his occupation as Carpenter.
Per the 1870 census he continues to reside in Ukiah, California and is now a farmer. On November 20, 1881 at the age of 55 George marries Catherine Crabtree in Mendocino County, California.
Per documents George dies in Ukiah, Medocino County, California February 24, 1903. There is a burial record that says he was buried but it doesn’t say where. He never returned to Iowa to see the children he left behind. Until recently due to the release of new documents the family thought he had died trying to find gold.
