George Washington Tressler was born April 23, 1862, near Blaine, Perry County, Pa. He died Jan. 26 at his home in Curlew, after a lingering illness.
He was the son of John and Jane Gutshall Tressler. At the age of 13 he united with the Lutheran church in Blaine, Pa. When he was 18 he left his father's farm and went to West Jefferson, Ohio, and worked with this older brother, Daniel, at the carpenter trade.
After two or three years he went to Des Moines where he was employed by a contractor, Lee F. Gardner, who was doing finishing work on the state capital. Mr. Tressler worked in Des Moines for some time. While living in Des Moines he came to Curlew for a visit with his uncle, Sam Tressler, at the time when the town of Curlew was beginning to be settled, due to the building of the Des Moines and Fort Dodge railroad.
In 1885 after a second visit to Curlew he took over his uncle's carpentering work in Curlew and continued it until his retirement. He built many of the houses and barns in the Curlew vicinity. Among the structures he built is the building which houses the First Baptist church of Curlew. The church was built in 1892 when Mr. Tressler was 30 years of age. He was an excellent carpenter and took great interest in the thoroughness and strength of his work.
On May 22, 1888, at Rolfe, he married Christina Berry, who had come to the Curlew vicinity in 1883, and who lived with her sister and brother on the Ole Leary farm 1 1/2 miles south of Curlew. The couple built a house in Curlew and resided there until death. Mrs. Tressler died July 3, 1936.
Four children were born to the Tresslers: Jennie, who later became Mrs. Everett Jensen of Goehner, Nebr., and died Sept. 8 (?), 1939; Evelyn, now Mrs. Nels P. Anderson, and Miss Winnie Tressler of Curlew; and Wiley who died at the age of 8 months.
Mr. Tressler leaves, in addition to his two daughters, four grandchildren, Mrs. Irene Malone, Lincoln, Nebr., Clyde Jensen, Goehner, Nebr., Willard G. and Edwin Anderson, Curlew, and twelve great-grandchildren.
When Mr. Tressler celebrated his 89th birthday on April 23 he was the oldest Tressler living. He is the last of his family.
Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were W. L. Heupel, Calro, Nebr., and his sister, Mrs. Winnie Heupel, Hickman, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Art Berger, Seward, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jensen, Goehner, Nebr.; Mrs. Harvey Malone, Lincoln, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wepking and Mrs. Frank Pope, Mason City; Mrs. Maude Brown, Graettinger; Earl Rouse, Havelock; Mr. and Mrs. Eddie White and Mr. and Mrs. Henry White, Mallard.
