Eugene R. Althof, age 79, of Stockton, IL passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Eugene was born on September 8, 1933 in Loran to William K. and Cecile Mae (Flickinger) Althof. Eugene married Gloria Siedschlag of Freeport on May 4, 1957 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. Survivors include his three children; Greg (Mary) Althof of Stockton, Gina Althof of Peoria AZ, Gayla (David) Jensen of Glendale, AZ and five grandchildren, Derek, Nathan and Bryant Althof and Jessica and Cory Jensen. After losing his wife of 45 years, he married Margery Houpt on July 8, 2007. His children through marriage include David (Mary) Toepfer of Pearl City, Brian (Judy) Toepfer of Freeport, Kevin Toepfer of Freeport, Mark Toepfer of Pearl City and John Houpt of Galena, IL and their children Sarah Cramer, Zachary Toepfer and Brittany Staples. His Brother Allen Althof of Lakeview, AR, sisters Phyllis (Gene) Myers of Bull Shoals, AR, Wilma Anderson, Pat (Jim) Gale and Marilyn (Larry) Shipley all of Freeport and many nieces and nephews. Eugene was proud of his military service in the Army. After working 15 years for Kraft Foods, he chose to for-go punching a time clock and went into sales. Over the years he sold Life Insurance, Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners and Menard and Wick Agricultural Buildings. He was a member of the Stockton Lions Club, VFW and the American Legion. The 4th of July was a special holiday for him as he emceed the Stockton 4th Celebration for several years. He was community minded and served two terms on the City Council. He was known for his sense of humor and always had a joke to share. He loved to travel and was able to visit all 50 states with Gloria as well as several European countries. He loved camping, attending his grandkids sporting events, golfing, and meeting his buddies daily for coffee. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Cecile Althof; two brothers, Karl and Phillip Althof; and his wife, Gloria Althof.
