Nathaniel was the son of Samuel B. and Mary Jane Dunbar Harben. He married Barbara Burdine Mauldin, daughter of Baalam and Susannah Gresham Mauldin. Together Nathaniel and Barbara had 10 children: Samuel B., Susan (Spriggs), James, John, Tyre, Balaam, Nathaniel W, Benjamin H., Jesse Mercer, and Lucinda E. Harben. Nathaniel Harbens grave is supposidly the oldest grave at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
