Velma E. Bussear, age 80, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, at 1:20 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Linda, in Sarcoxie. Velma was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Gentry, Ark., to Arthur and Gertie (Walker) Stanton.

Before raising her family, Velma taught Sunday School. She was a Baptist. She married Cecil Bussear in 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1982. Velma owned and operated Arkie's Cafe in Liberal, Kan., for many years. She also worked as a cook at the Holiday Inn in Joplin.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda Preston and husband, Terry, of Sarcoxie, and Shirley Kubitscheck, of Whitehouse, Tenn.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob Stanton, of Conroe, Texas; sisters, Blanchie Stewart, of Big Sandy, Texas, Eileen Schaffer, of Kingwood, Texas, and Rebecca Merager, of Pasadena, Calif.

A memorial wake for Velma Bussear will be held Sunday, June 28, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the home of Linda at 246 CR 90 in Sarcoxie. Memorial contributions are preferred to the Carthage Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
