He married on 17 February 1877 in St Clair County, Emily Marilla Hollingsworth the daughter of Giles F and Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Hawkins Hollingsworth.
He was waylaid and murdered by robbers in Arkansas 1898 while on a land-buying trip. His wife Marilla lived only a few months longer. Most of their orphans are found on the 1900 census living with two Hunt families in Arkansas. Son James Hubert Creel was with uncle John Milton Creel in Rains Co., TX.
