Lloyd A. Fenn, Kooskia Civic Leader, Dead

Lloyd A. Fenn, prominent educator, lawyer, and long-time resident of Kooskia died in Grangeville General Hospital Friday at 7 a.m. Mr. Fenn had been in failing health for the last several years. He would have been 69 on Monday. Death was attributed to the hardening of the arteries by Dr. D. J. Soltman of Grangeville, the attending physician.

He had been hospitalized for about one week. He had previously been seriously ill in the hospital last spring but had appeared to be feeling fairly well this summer.

Mr. Fenn was the son of Major Frank Fenn and Mrs. Florence Fenn, who were early Idaho county pioneers. Major Fenn played a prominent part in the Chief Joseph War in 1877.

He was born Nov. 9, 1884, at Fairview, a small Idaho County pioneer community. he received his early education in the Boise and Lewiston public schools.

GRADUATED FROM U OF I
In 1911 he was graduated from the University of Idaho with the degree of bachelor of science in forestry. He was a member of the first class of Forestry students to graduate from the University.

After graduation, he worked as a forest ranger for five years, at which time he resigned to enter the University of Montana to study law. He was graduated from that school in 1917 with an LLB degree.

He practiced law at Chico, Calif., until 1919, when he returned to Kooskia and purchased the Kooskia Mountaineer, a weekly newspaper, which he published for 20 years.

In 1924, while still publishing the Mountaineer, he accepted the position of Superintendent of the Kooskia schools, which position he held until 1948 when he gave up the superintendency but stayed on to teach mathematics and physics. In 1952 he resigned because of failing health.

SERVED IN LEGISLATURE
From 1921 to 1931 he served as Idaho County representative in the Legislature at Boise. In 1938 and again in 1943, he served as chief clerk in the Idaho House.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Idaho State Tax Commission, to which he was appointed by Gov. Charles Gossett and again by Gov. Len Jordan in March 1952.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Kooskia and of Calam Temple of the Shrine at Lewiston. He was also a member of the Kooskia Odd Fellows Lodge and Lions Club. His college fraternity was Phi Delta Theta.

He is survived by his widow, Shirley, at Kooskia; his mother, Florence E. Fenn, 91 living at College Place, Wash.; two sisters, Mr.s Rhoda M. Willey, College Place, and Mrs. Allene Quist of Walla Walla; two brothers, Homer of Dunsmuir, Calif.; and free D. of El Cajon, Calif.; a cousin, K. O. Fenn of Grangeville; four nieces and seven nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Trenary's Chapel in Kooskia on Monday at 2 p.m. with John F. Rice of Grangeville officiating.

The body will be taken to Spokane for cremation at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home.
