A. L. was the son of Samuel Anderson Sprankle & Rebecca Jane Leffard.

He married Ella Birdie Weed on 23 Mar 1887 in Ballston, Saratoga Co., NY.

A. L. graduated from Ursinus College and Albany Law School. He owned A.L. Sprankle & Co. in Altoona, PA. In 1890, he was charged with conspiracy to defraud and collusion. Rather than face the charges, he and Ella fled to Canada. They can be found on the 1891 Canadian census in Sarawak, Grey North, Ontario, Canada with the names Andrew L. and Ella B. Weed.

At some point, A. L. left Canada. He died in Baja California, Mexico in February 1912. He and Ella apparently divorced, as she was married to Edward I. Abrams, a musician, and living in Rochester, NY at the time of the 1910 census. Ella died in 1937 in Rochester.

A death notice in the Altoona Times includes: "The sad news has been received of the death of A. L. Sprankle, son of Samuel and Rebecca J. Sprankle, whose death occurred in Mexico, Lower California. The unsettled condition of the country has made it doubtful at the present time of recovering his remains."
