Samuel Baker Dies Today At Ossian
Death Follows That Of Wife Only Few Days—Funeral Thursday
Samuel Baker, 80, civil war veteran, died at 8:45 o'clock this morning at his home, 1 ¼ miles west of Ossian of cancer of the liver. He had been bedfast six weeks. His wife passed away last Friday and was buried Sunday.
Mr. Baker was a native of Monroe County, Ohio, where he was born on March 28, 1847, a son of John and Susannah (Bolinger) Baker. He came to Indiana in 1851 and settled in Allen County, near Zanesville, and lived near Zanesville until fifteen years ago, when the family moved to the farm west of Ossian where he died. He served in the war in Co. N, 66th Indiana cavalry.
His marriage to Eleanor Stephens took place on September 15, 1878. No children were born to them but they raised two boys from childhood, namely, Henry Sprunger, deceased, and Glen Dennis, of Fort Wayne.
Surviving are three brothers and four sisters, Jacob Baker, Woodburn; David and Seymour Baker, near Zanesville; Mrs. Margaret Bunting, Laotta, Ind.; Mrs. Eliza Farrell, and Mrs. Barbara Ellen Redding, Fort Wayne; Mrs. Mary Farrell, near Zanesville. There also are nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Uniontown church and burial will be in the Uniontown cemetery, Rev. Gilleaple will have charge, assisted by Rev. Preston Pohemus, of Ossian.
