US Congressman. He moved to Danville, Pennsylvania as one of its founders in the 1790s, and the town was named for him. Montgomery became a merchant and businessman and acquired a sizable fortune through the operation of a store, gristmill, sawmill, farm, and other enterprises. He was also a civic activist, taking part in the founding or administration of numerous schools and other institutions. He was a chief promoter of turnpikes in Danville and surrounding Montour County. In 1800 Montgomery was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. A longtime member of the Pennsylvania Militia, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the Eighty-first Regiment in 1805. In 1806 Montgomery was elected to the US House as a Democratic-Republican and served one term, 1807 to 1809. In 1809 he was appointed Major General of the militia's Ninth Division. In 1828 he was appointed to the State Canal Commission and served as its President. Daniel Montgomery was the son of William Montgomery, who served in the Continental Congress and the US House of Representatives.
