In the middle of the depression of the year 1935, Gladys and Ivan auctioned off most of their belongings and moved to Oregon. They packed all the belongings that they could in a wooded box that Ivan had attached to the rear of a 1927 Dodge club coop Auto. They bought a tent and army cots along the way on the trip to Oregon. They had two children per cot, feet to feet which they slept on.

Things weren't to good at first in Oregon. Ivan worked at picking hops, cut wood and recived benefits from welfare agencies. His pay was $1.00 a cord for wood and almost a day to cut that much. He later got work with the WPA. During World War II every thing improved financially since Ivan, Gladys and their oldest son Charles all worked in the shipyards. Gladys worked at the welder shop at another shipyard while Ivan worked at the Kaiser yard. Ivan worked most of his life working at a feed and and sugar for penicillin manufacturing plant as a condenser operator.
