James Conway Ringling, 78, of Fort Madison, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Fort Madison Health Center. Born Dec. 31, 1925, in Munich, Germany, he was the son of Robert Edward and Virginia Sullivan Ringling.

He married Aileen Mustell in Chicago. Mr. Ringling worked for Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. He began as a ticket office clerk and by 1963, when he retired, he was vice president, scheduling dates and seasons for the show. He was the third generation of the Ringling Brother Circus family, the grandson of Charles Edward Ringling, one of the founding brothers. He graduated from Loyola University at Chicago with a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry. He was a member of Ss. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Madison. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles Ringling of Bradenton, Fla., and Christopher Ringling of Miliani, Hawaii; one daughter, Lucretia Ringling of Texas; four grandchildren; one great–grandchild; one brother, Charles Ringling of Texas, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, with family present from 7 to 8 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Ringling will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating.

A private burial will be at the family mausoleum out of state. A memorial has been established. Contributions may be left at Barr Memorial Chapel.
