On the 1880 U.S. Census of Martin County, Indiana, he was enumerated as James W. Toney, 15-year-old nephew, in the home of Barnet Chastain. His first wife was Keziah or Mariah Chastain. In September 1895 in Martin County, Indiana, James Tony/Toney married Martha Chastain (Keziah/Mariah's younger sister).
On the 1900 census he was enumerated as James Chastain and Barnet was enumerated as his widowed father. On his death certificate, James' parents were named as Barnet Chastain and Polly Ann Toney. I believe Barnet was his adoptive father.
