Howard Dale Nielson, son of Harry and Minerva (Anderson) Nielsen, was born on Friday, July 1, 1932 in Milaca, Minnesota. He attended and graduated from Pine City High school in 1950. Right after graduating, Howard enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in the Korean War during 1950-1951. Howard met the love of his life Dolores Wiese, and they were united in marriage on April 21, 1956 in Austin, Minnesota. The couple moved to Jackson, where they made their home together. Howard and Dolores were blessed with three children Joel, Paul and Joy. Howard worked for the United States Postal Service in Jackson, as a rural and city mail carrier for 38 years. Howard was an active and dedicated member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Jackson, and a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus. As Howard’s health started to decline, he moved into the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, where he passed away on February 18, 2020 at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 17 days.

Howard enjoyed the outdoors. He was a farmer, enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing golf and bowling. Sharing these activities with his children was one of Howard’s greatest joys in life. He was also an animal lover and enjoyed any pet that crossed his path. Whether he was on the farm, walking the mail route, or out for his daily walks with his wife, he had to always stop and say hi to any pet he saw. Howard’s family wishes to continue on his love for pets, by having memorials made out to PAWS of Jackson.

The family would like to thank Crossroads Care Center staff and the Hospice staff for their compassionate care for Howard. Also thank you to all friends and neighbors that have shown their support for Howard and Dolores over the years.

Howard is survived by his wife, Dolores (Wiese) Nielsen of Jackson; his son Joel Nielsen of Placerville, California; son Paul (Julie) Nielsen of Ankeny, Iowa; daughter Joy (Michael) Tessmer of Winfield, Kansas; sister Ruth McCarthy of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; 5 grandchildren Ross and LeighAnna Nielsen, Ryan Nielsen, and Aideen and Madeline Tessmer; sisters in law Bernice Mahnke of San Mateo, California and Marie Wiese of Austin, Minnesota; along with many nieces and nephews.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Minerva Nielsen, brother Bob Nielsen, and an infant son Brian Nielsen.

Blessed be the memory of Howard Dale Nielsen.
