Born William Winfield Winn, but nearly always known as Willis, to Dawson and Matilda (Underwood) Winn in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, on August 3rd, 1861. His mother died when Willis was a child and his grandparents, Willis and Margaret Underwood, raised Willis and his siblings, until his father remarried. Willis married Mary Elizabeth Boots on March 10th, 1886, in St. Clair County, Missouri. They had 8 children while living in Missouri. Later they traveled by wagon train to North Dakota to homestead in the Coleharbor area (McLean County) North Dakota. Willis lived with his son Walt Winn and his daughter Lillie DuVall in Coleharbor later in life. Willis died in Coleharbor on March 20th, 1958 and the funeral was held on March 24th at the Coleharbor School Gym. Burial was at the Coleharbor Cemetery, Coleharbor, ND.
