Garrett had a free spirit, an adventurous nature, and an intoxicating laugh. He was never quiet in his life, always enthusiastic, finding something to do, a fun-loving kid who grew up to be a really dedicated young man. In high school he played soccer, tennis and the saxaphone. He was active in Young Life and the First Baptist Church of Rockport where he helped establish and organize the annual Big Kahuna Surf Trip. He wanted to become a model or actor, but after the 9-11-2001 terrorist attacks, he decided to join the military. After his 2002 graduation from Rockport Fulton High School he joined the United States Army and did a tour in Afghanistan from 2004-2005 and began his tour in Iraq in 2006, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. An avid surfer, being stationed in Hawaii was extra special for Garrett. He was a sniper and did reconnaissance work for the Army. He was one of 14 soldiers who died when the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter aircraft they were riding went down in northern Iraq. He was promoted posthumously from corporal to sergeant. He is survived by his parents, Patrick O. and Patricia Ann Baker McLead; his brother Mason; his grandparents, Norman and Jean Faye McLead; Aunts Pam (Paul) Emmons, Joy (John) Pearce, Debra (Richard) Horton, Uncle Michael McLead and many loving cousins. Garrett was a classmate of Lcpl. Matthew Wayne Holloway, who was killed in Iraq in 2005. Bio by: Sue
