Ruby Wilkerson Tilley, 83, of Hillsborough, NC, passed away on June 1, 2020. She was born in Orange County to the late Claiborn Fletcher Wilkerson, Sr. and Eunice Wilson Wilkerson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Gurley.
She started her life at Mars Hill Baptist Church and was a Sunday School teacher. At age 20 upon marriage, she became a faithful member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 50 years. Ruby was an active member of the United Methodist Women and a founder of the Mary Martha Busy Ladies. She was part of countless suppers, local and district mission events and many meetings and cleanups. Her last act of service was making and giving away over 200 facemasks during the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
A graduate of Hillsboro High School in 1955, she was a homemaker and worked variously as a private seamstress, with the Orange County Extension Service, Orange County Public Schools, and Orange County Tax Collectors Office.
Ruby is survived by her husband, Charles Wesley Tilley; son, Wesley Lee Tilley (Sonja); grandchildren Nathaniel “Nathan” Tilley and Lauren Tilley; siblings, Jean W. Tate (William), Paul L. “Roy” Wilkerson (Shirley), Claiborn F. “Junior” (Gail), John W. “Johnny” (Wendy), ; aunts, Ruth Wilson Lowe and Virginia Wilson, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held Friday, June 5, 2020 at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when the community is able to gather.
The family will receive friends with a drive-thru visitation Friday evening from 6-8:30 PM at the church.
