John was the son of John Haskell and Hannah Parsons. On 9 May 1802, he married Sally J. Parsons, and they had at least five children: Nehemiah Parsons (1805-1867), John (1806-??), Charles Edward (1807-1897), Jared (1809-1893), and Samuel Sewall (1810-??).

After Sally's death in 1813, he married Mary Snow on 3 Mar 1814 in New Gloucester, Cumberland, ME, and they had at least four children: George Washington (1814-1874), Nelson (18181-1897), Emeline (1820-1903), and Harrison G. Otis (1822-1867).

According to the Maine, Nathan Hale Cemetery Collection, he was buried in "Old Cemetery" in West Poland. A similar record for his wife gives the same cemetery, and she is buried in this cemetery.
