The family stone was engraved: William - Enlisted April 1861 Mass. Vol. Militia Co. E. 5th Reg. Sergt. and Color Bearer Killed in Action 1st Battle Bull Run July 1, 1861. Whatever betides the colors of the 5th will be found in their place.

[The date of death does not match the very nice "family record" plaque attached to the Lawrence memorial which lists William's date of death as July 5, 1862. Also, the First Battle of Bull Run took place on July 21, 1861 not July 1st or 5th].
