George H. Spencer was baptized 24 Oct 1820 at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England, son of John Spencer & Mary Harold. He married Elizabeth Iliffe 21 Sep 1842 at Hinckley. She was the daughter of John Iliffe. In 1841, the Spencer and Iliffe families lived in the same household in Hinckley [1841 England Census]. They had at least 1 son, George (b. ~1844) and 4 daughters: Mary Ann (b. ~1842), Elizabeth “Betsy” (b. ~1845), Eliza (b. ~1850), and Hannah (b. ~ 1859) [1851 and 1861 England Census]. George and his wife, Elizabeth, worked in the hosiery industry; he made cotton stockings and she was a stitcher of stockings. Elizabeth died in 1863 and George set off for America in 1865. His son, George, and three of his daughters, Elizabeth, Eliza and Hannah, followed him to America in 1875.

In 1880 George lived in Gilford, NH with Margaret, his wife – he was a knitter in a hosiery mill. Margaret (maiden name unknown) died 2 July 1883 in Lakeport, NH. In 1900 in Laconia, George is retired and living with his daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” and her 2nd husband George Wood and their daughter, Lucy. In 1910 in Laconia, George lived with his daughter, Elizabeth and her 3rd husband, George Poor. George H. Spencer committed suicide 6 May 1911.
