She was the fifth child of her eleven siblings; Bobby Walker, Birdie Johnson, Alex Lee Batts, Robert Lee Batts, Willie Pearl Patterson, Joe Samuel Batts, Raymond Anderson Batts, Horace Ray Batts, Lelia Mae Batts, and Carrie Hazel Tabor. Alma accepted Christ at early age at Bethlehem Baptist Church. She worked tirelessly to support Grants Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and Saint Peter’s United Methodist Church as a member of various auxiliaries. She loved to teach the word of God to anyone who would or would not listen. She married Dr. John Wesley Perry on December 25, 1956 and from that union, four children were born; Brenda L. Tolbert, Sheranda Pearl, John Wesley Perry and Sheree Denise Smith. She later moved to Austin, Texas in August of 1965. Alma attended grade school in Hammond, Texas, and went on to graduate from Prairie View A&M University, where she earned a B.S. in Home Economics Education. She went on to obtain a Masters of Education from Antioch University in Yellowstone, Ohio. She was a public educator for over forty-three years. Alma received many promotions and awards while being employed with Austin Independent School District.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Wesley Perry; daughters, Brenda Tolbert, and Sheranda Perry; son, John Wesley Perry, Jr.; her siblings: Bobby Walker, Birdie Johnson, Axell Lee Batts, Willie Pearl Patterson, Raymond Batts, and Carrie Hazel Tabor; and grandson, Germicheal N. Perry-Moses, Sr.
Those left to cherish precious memories include brothers: Robert Lee, Joe Samuel and Horace Ray Batts; sister, Lelia Mae Batts, all of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Sheree Denise Smith of Frisco, Texas; grandsons, Jermaine Tolbert of Pompano Beach, Florida, and John Perry, III of Austin; granddaughters, Nikkitres Daniel of Pompano Beach, Alma-MeShaun Smith, and Alvine-LaJoyce Smith of Frisco; great-granddaughter, Sontay Moses, and great-grandson, Germichael N. Perry, Jr., both of Austin; great-granddaughter, Auriah Fennell, and great-grandson, Avery Fennell, both of Bastrop, Texas; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
