Nathaniel Toothaker was christened on December 23, 1753, in Harpswell, Cumberland County, Maine, the son of Ebenezer and Mary/Mercy (Hall) Toothaker. His birthdate has been shown as December 23, 1749, but the christening record shows 1753. On October 24, 1782, in Harpswell he married Ruth Coombs, the daughter of Anthony and Ruth (Gethell) Coombs. Ruth was born in 1763, likely in Harpswell. Sources indicate she died in 1841 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, where she had moved with the families of several of her children.

Nathaniel settled in Islesborough, Waldo County, Maine (formerly known as Long Island Plantation in the Upper Penobscot Bay) in 1793. He was granted land on West Bay Cove on October 24, 1799, “containing about 50 acres of good land, 50 acres of swamp and poor spruce wood and is 5 miles by water to the mill”. By April 29, 1813, he was in Belmont, Waldo County, Maine, when he signed a petition to organize a militia that was to be for the protection of the town against the British. This is the last record of Nathaniel, so he died sometime after this date.

Nathaniel and Ruth had ten children: (1) Rebecca Toothaker (1783-1860) married Levi Simmons 1779-1840); (2) Bethiah Toothaker (1785-1848) married first Luther Simmons (1779-1820), then Frederick Schneringer (1791-1873); (3) Mary Toothaker (1787-1853) married first Nathaniel Evans, Jr. (1791-1819), second Luther Simmons (1792-?), and third David Patch 1778-1836); (4) Mercy Toothaker (1787-1864) married Willard Howard (1782-1840); (5) William Toothaker (1788-1865) married Mary Trim (1788-1831).

(6) Ruth Toothaker (1794-?) married first Jacob French (1781-1840), second John Saffle (1781-1851), and third Aaron Arnold (1781-1867); (7) Mehetable Toothaker (1795-1860) married William Frohock (1795-1871); (8) John Toothaker (1796-1886) married first Beersheba Trim (1793-1876) and then Nancy Ann Shreeve Helterbran (1808-1901); (9) Oliver Toothaker (1799-1835) married Rosina Trim (1796-1856); and (10) Isaac Toothaker (1801-1873) married Eunice Robinson (1804-1869).

The identities of the ten children are recorded in Genealogy of the Relatives of William J. Miller, published in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania in 1963, and written by William J. Miller in 1899. The Toothaker family listing is based on information given him by his mother, Mary Jane French, who was the daughter of Ruth Toothaker and Jacob French.

Nathaniel Toothaker was the grandson of Andrew Toothaker (1679-1760) and Abigail White (1680-?); and the great grandson of Roger Toothaker (1634-1692) and Mary Allen (c. 1644-1695). On May 18, 1692, Roger Toothaker was charged with witchcraft in Salem, arrested, and taken to the Boston Jail where he died awaiting trial. Mary (Allen) Toothaker was examined and indicted on witchcraft charges but never tried. She was killed on August 5, 1695, in an Indian attack on her home in Billerica on the Concord River. Mary’s sister, Martha (Allen) Carrier was charged with witchcraft and Roger testified on her behalf, but she was convicted and executed on August 19, 1693.
