Dr. Bottomley was on the staff of Santa Maria Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1951 to 1976. He served in various capacities, including secretary of the medical staff, director of quality assurance and chairman of various committees. Dr. Bottomley was also an assistant professor of surgery at Boston University in the 1950's and 1960's, and was associated with the medical clinic at Massachusetts Institute of Technology until 1977. He retired in 1980.
Dr. Bottomley was treasurer of the Francis W. Countway Medical Library in Boston; chairman of the board of trustees of the Brimmer and May School in Brookline, Massachusetts from 1965 to 1971; and president of the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach, New Hampshire for 17 years.
Dr. Bottomley lived in Newton, Massachusetts for many years. He was also a summer resident of North Hampton, New Hampshire all his life, and he called North Hampton "home" for the last seven years of his life. Dr. Bottomley died of a heart attack on his 70th birthday. He was survived by his wife Lydia (Fuller); two sons, John T. of North Hampton and Stephen D. Bottomley of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; three daughters, Lydia Langley of North Hampton, Pamela Bottomley of Rye, New Hampshire and Jill Beverstock of Stratham, New Hampshire; and seven grandchildren.
