Son of Eugene B. and Missouri Elizabeth (Davenport) Gurganus. He married Elizabeth R. Stutzman on January 17, 1920 in Summit County, Ohio. They had two daughters and one son.

Patrolman Eugene Gurganus, Pennsylvania Railroad Police, was shot and killed while patrolling the railroad tracks in Maple Heights, Ohio. Four of the six suspects were arrested.

Patrolman Gurganus was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Pennsylvania Railroad Police Department for 11 years.
