Col Kleckner. a wellknown champion of Palm Springs charities, died Thursday while on a skiing vacation in Vail. CO. He was 67. Kleckner, in Vail with his wife, Shirley, was apparently stricken with a massive brain hemorrhage and collapsed Wednesday while skiing, according to a family spokesman. Kleckner a full-time Palm Springs resident for 12 years, died Thursday at the Aurora Hospital in Denver, where he had been airlifted by helicopter, a spokesman for the family said Funeral services are pending The spokesman said the Kleckner's were avid skiers and vacationed often in Vail. Although he was involved in numerous charitable events, Kleckner was recognized for spearheading the development of the Palm Springs Youth Center As a long-time member and past president of the center's board of directors, Kleckner was instrumental in raising money to purchase the center. The youth center is now known as the McCallum-James Youth Center. More recently, Kleckner headed a group to raise funds for the Coachella Valley's first intcrgenerational child care center The center, which would allow senior citizens to provide day care for children of working parents, would be located at a school in the Desert Sands Unified School Districl The project is sponsored by the Klvirita Lewis Foundation The Kleckners also were contributors to the Friends of the Bob Hope Cultural Center, now under construction in Palm Desert A native of New York, Kleckner served with the Army in Europe during World War H After the war, he invested in real estate throughout Southern California, particularly Orange County In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Kathy Kleckner of Palm Springs. Kanie Kleckner of Santa Barbara and Vicki Kleckner of Los Angeles, and two sons, Barry Kleckner of Los Angeles and Hicky Kleckner of Orange County
