Visitation for Dessie Avone Russie will be held at Basham Funeral Care (3312 Niles St.) on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, from 5:00 8:00 p.m. and the funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (316 A Street) on Thursday, January 23, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Southwest.
Dessie was born May 12, 1932, in Amarillo, Texas, and she passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2003, in Bakersfield.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gena and Walt Swain; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Angela Russie; sister, Emily L. Ussary; granddaughter, Amy Swain; grandsons, Joseph Swain, Brandon Russie and Brent Russie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dessie was involved in genealogy for over 30 years. She authored and published a book on the history of the Samuel Hamilton Huckaberry family in 1981, and she also wrote poetry. Dessie was a self-taught pianist and organist. She enjoyed going to the senior citizen dances and crocheting. She was a regular at the Pantry Restaurant where she had many friends.
