Army Cpl. Powell was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington. Powell was shot during combat operations in Taramiyah, a Tigris River farming village about 25 miles north of the capital, and died in Balad. Will graduated in 2005 from Reitz High School in Evansville, Indiana. He wanted to join the Marines but his mom talked him out of it so he got a job with RC Cola. When he approached his mom again about a military career, she gave her consent and on February 14, 2006, Will joined the Army. Friends noticed a change in him after joining the military – he seemed to hit his stride. He had a deep sense of pride serving his country, worked hard, and did his best. In April 2007, he was deployed to Iraq and made his feelings known about the Iraq War. He said he was fine with going to war, that he didn't care if he agreed or disagreed. As far as he was concerned, the President was his boss. He was posthumously awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Will's passion was sports. He enjoyed attending the University of Kentucky basketball games and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games. As a skilled bowler with an average score topping 200, he qualified for the Junior Olympics. He also played intramural basketball at Reitz. Friends remember Will for his unswerving friendship and his bond with his church's younger children – always energetic, never gloomy, always happy, and always helping out. Will would have been touched by the patriotic show of respect at his funeral. A line of motorcyclists with the Rolling Thunder and the Patriot Guard Riders clubs met the casket at Tri-State Aero and led it on a lunch hour procession. Many residents stood along the motorcade's path, holding their hands over their hearts as Will passed by.Powell, Will M.
