Freda Lucille Carney, age 97, of Urich, MO, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2020, at Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, of natural causes.

Freda was born August 2, 1922, to Fred and Gladys ‘Owens’ Hillebrand in Urich, Missouri. After graduating from Urich High School, she attended secretarial school in the Kansas City area. Following that, she lived near the Plaza, and worked at Halls. She married Howard Carney in 1947. Together they had two sons. The couple bought a farm just south of Urich, where she spent the rest of her life – except for the last few months in a Clinton nursing home.

In earlier years, Freda worked hard as a farm wife, mother and homemaker. Involvement in her church and community was important to Freda. She enjoyed her bridge club, involvement in the Evangel Presbyterian Church and community betterment. Freda was a lifetime member of the University of Missouri Extension-Grand River Homemakers. Every year they had an auction to raise money for projects the club supported in the community. Freda threw herself into making crafts and food to sell at the auction. She was well known for her sewing and quilting skills and donated a quilt to the annual auction for a chance to win the quilt. As the Urich Historical Museum began to develop she became active, supporting it and she also donated a quilt there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred (1970) and Gladys (1980) Hillebrand, and her brother, Milton (1971), and her husband of 46 years, Howard Carney (1993).

She is survived by her son, Russell Carney, his wife, Mary Beth Mann; son, Kent Carney and his wife, Pam; grandchildren, Betsy and Alex of Springfield, MO and Brent of Urich, MO; two great grandchildren, Emmilyn and Kynna Carney of Clinton, MO; and a brother-in-law, Bill Carney, and his wife, Gerry, of Topeka, KS.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Freda will be buried in a graveside service on Friday, May 15, 2:00 p.m. at Urich Cemetery under the direction of the Consalus Funeral Home. Interment will follow.

The family has requested that memorial contributions may be made to either the University of Missouri Extension-Grand River Homemakers, or the Urich Historical Society (Urich Community Historical Society, 323 N. Main, Urich, MO 64788) or may be left with Consalus Funeral Home, 209 S. 2nd Street, Clinton, MO 64735.
