Son of John & Sarah (Bates) Stidham. He was a carpenter's apprentice until he and a younger brother went to California on a wagon train during the gold rush. He returned to Indiana and was elected Sheriff of Wayne County in 1858. In 1861 he became Capt. of the 57th Indiana Volunteers who fought in the Civil War. He led his company of 100 volunteers through difficult campaigns of Generals Buell, Rosecrans, Grant, and Sherman. During which his 100 men were reduced to less than 25 due to sickness and casualties.
