James Monroe Gouverneur was born in the White House in 1822 and he became Deaf as an infant. His parents were Samuel Gouverneur and Maria Monroe. James was a grandson of President James Monroe. James attended two schools for the deaf: New York School (Fanwood) for the Deaf and Pennsylvania School for the Deaf for a few years. He became insane during his early adulthood and he was admitted to Mt. Hope Retreat Hospital near Baltimore. He stayed there for 35 years until his death in 1885. He was single and never married. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Baltimore Cemetery.
