MARGARET COTTON POFF
Margaret (Peg) Cotton Poff was born in
Winona, Minnesota, on February 6, 1900, the
second daughter of Herbert and Mary Edith Van
Eman Cotton. Herbert Cotton worked in a Wagon
Works factory at Winona, Minnesota. Hearing
about the work that was available with the Arpin
Lumber Co., Herbert, John and Leslie, all
brothers, came by horse and wagon in April to
work and clear land before their families came.
They settled in the Glendale district about 12
miles north of Bruce. In the fall of that year, the
three wives and families came by train to join their
husbands and fathers. Esma, Hugh, Margaret and
Elda were born in Minnesota. Kathline, Herberta
and Marian were born on the farm in Glendale
which had 25 acres cleared.
Before a school was built at Glendale, the
children were taken by horse and buggy to the
Murry School. Mr. Cotton was very interested to
see that his children got an education. Seeing that
the Murry School was so far away he built a school
calling it first the "Klinger School", later it was
changed to the "Glendale School." The school was
the first state graded school in this part of the
country. It consisted of two rooms plus the 2-year
high school. The grade school was taught by Emily
Miller.
Mr. Cotton was a carpenter by trade, also an
assessor for years, serving on the town board and
school board. He helped build the Glendale
School, Lone Pine and Lone Elm Schools.
Margaret attended school at Glendale; after
that she went into Ladysmith staying at the Win.
Dodson home to attend the Rusk County Normal,
graduating in 1918. After graduation, she taught
at Caley Lake one term (meaning 1 year), grades
1-8; Rusk Farm one term, grades 1-4; Exeland one
term, grades 1-2; Lampson for her last year of
teaching - there she met her future husband,
Stanley Poff, at a pie social at Exeland. They were
married June 2, 1923 in Duluth after the school
year ended; they left for the oil fields near Casper,
Wyoming, driving a Hupmobile, living in a tent till
the work ended in the fall. They came back to
Ladysmith where they lived till after their two
children were born. They returned to the Glendale
area where their last child was born.
Their children are: Jasper, semi-retired in-
surance salesman living in Mindoro; Jean, RN, liv-
ing in Florida, summers in Canada; and Nancy,
teacher in Bloomer (English and Speech).
