Obit from RootsWeb:
Edwin G. Phelps was born near Chequest, Union Twp, Davis County, Iowa, Oct 31st 1856. Died May 27, 1905, aged 49 years, 7 month and 4 days. He was a son of Harrison G. O. and Eliza E. Phelps, who were among the earliest settlers who entered land, in Davis county. He was married to Miss Clara Jackson, Nov 15th 1882, who was with him through his long illness, and with one brother and one sister are all that is left of a large family. The funeral occurred at the M.E. church at Chequest, was conducted by the Rev. Collier of Eldon assisted by Rev. John Davis of Troy Tuesday the 30th at 11 o'clock in the presence of a large audience of neighbors and relations who came together to pay a last tribute of respect to this good man. The burial, following immediately after the funeral, was in Rouch cemetery. And although the weather was threathing (sic), a long procession followed the remains to the grave where he was laif to rest beside father, mother, brothers and sisters who have gone on before. Ed. as we all knew him, spent his childhood and all his life in this neighborhood until in 1896 he and his wife moved to Eldon, where he was living during his last illness. He united with the M.E. church in early life of which he was a constant and faithful member, through lige doing his duty towards God and fellow man. He was sick very much of his life but patient through it all, and now he has entered into rest. We would not call him back. May we so live that we may all meet in the morning when the mists have cleared away.
