U.S. Navy Seaman Albert A. Balsamo faithfully executed his duties to our nation in the Vietnam War, aboard the USS Topeka (CLG-8). He served from 7 April 1965 until 2 April 1967 before transferring to the Naval Reserve for another 2-1/2 years. The ship operated in the South China Sea and in the Gulf of Tonkin providing naval gunfire support for the troops ashore and supporting carrier air operations by conducting search and rescue missions for downed aircrews.

For his service, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He joined the Hempstead Police Dept in 1974, retiring in 1999. He was a Police Officer on patrol for much of that time and worked with our own Bill Michell for over 16 years.

Continuing his dedicated service to his community, he taught DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) in Hempstead schools.

In the latter part of his career, he created the Hempstead Police Athletic League, which gave him much joy and satisfaction. During that time, he was promoted to Detective.

Patriot Guard Riders of New York participation.
