He was born in Winter Harbor, a son of W.P. and Myrtle Guptill. He graduated from Deering High School and Hebron Academy. He played football and was a member of the Four Horsemen. He also played baseball and track. He received a scholarship to attend Hebron Academy and continued to be active in sports.
Mr. Guptill was a superintendent for Sealtest Ice Cream and worked at the Red Sands Restaurant. He was also a horse trainer for Sam Aceto.
His wife of 62 years, Marion W. Guptill, died in 1991.
He is survived by three nephews, George H. Riley Jr. of Bridgton, Robert Hall of Maryland and Paul E. Riley of Lumberville, Pa.
A funeral was held Wednesday at Hay and Peabody in Portland with burial in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
