Oscar died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 102. He was said to be the oldest resident of Johnson County, and had lived there for 95 years. He was the son of William Alsip and Lutitia Jackson and had walked with his parents and five siblings from Kentucky to Illinois in 1869. Oscar's father died when he was 11, and he helped support the family by digging slumps to clear farmland and cut lumber for railroad ties. For a day's work he would earn 50 cents.

He was a farmer and blacksmith. He married Martha J. Shavorne on 11 Oct 1882 at Johnson County, IL. She preceded him in death on 2 Mar 1919. Together they had 10 children. Surviving him were three daughters, Lillie Ann Alsip Simmons, Sarah Alsip Watson, and Necie Alsip May; and three sons, Marshall Alsip, Joseph Alsip, and Ray Alsip. At 100 years of age his grandchildren numbered 97 and great grandchildren 32.
