Robert L. “Bob” Mehl, 79, Minot, ND, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020, at Trinity Hospital, Minot, ND.

Robert Lloyd Mehl was born December 2, 1940, to William and Louise (Ziegler) Mehl, in Kief, ND. He was the youngest of nine children. He started his education in Turtle Lake, ND, before moving to Minot when he was eight years old to live with various siblings. At the age of 14, he felt that maybe his life was not heading in the right direction, and it was at that time that he sought help from local law enforcement, and was placed at the Tolley Boys Ranch, in Tolley, ND. At that time this was like an orphanage. He was then fostered out to families in the area that treated him like their own, and he always enjoyed visiting with these families with his wife and children.

Bob worked all through his high school years, but found time to play basketball, and he was good at it. He graduated from Tolley High School in 1961, and on September 30, 1962, he married the love of his life, Carole Grose, and to this day if he was to open his wallet for you, her graduation picture would be the first photo that you saw. To this union four children were born, Shelley, Jeffrey, Keith and Becky.

Bob worked at Purity Dairy, Ott’s Dairy Farm, snow removal for Thompson-Larson Funeral Home and was a light equipment operator at the City of Minot’s Rosehill Memorial Park in Minot for 44 years. After retirement from the city, he started what we all call his dream job as a ranger at the Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot. If he was not playing golf or attending golf tournaments with grandkids, you could find him on tee box one doing his job and being an ambassador for that course that he loved so much. One huge accomplishment was that he was very proud of was when he played in the KMOT Classic Golf Tournament and shot his career low of 72.

Bob was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Bob’s grandkids were the light of his life. He was their biggest super fan, teaching them how to play golf, basketball, baseball and shared life lessons with them to form them into great people. He loved to joke and tell stories. He loved westerns of any kind. Bob never wanted anyone to struggle, and would give you the shirt of his back if you needed it.

Bob enjoyed golf, coin collecting, working the yard, always finding something to fix, decorating the house and yard for holidays and visiting with people.

Bob will be greatly missed, and we will cherish our memories with this amazing man, husband, dad and grandfather.

His loving family includes: wife of 57 years, Carole Mehl, Minot; children, Jeffrey Mehl, Menoken, ND, Keith (Kim) Mehl, Watford City, ND, Shelley (Patrick) Duchscherer, Minot, ND, and Becky Jones, Minot, ND; grandchildren, Cody Duchscherer, Haili Duchscherer, Grady Duchsherer, Tanner Mehl, Casey Mehl, Zachary Mehl, Ty Jones and Jaci Jones; great-grandchild, Ruxin Mehl; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, William and Louise Mehl; brothers, Rueben, Albert, Fred, Helmer, Sam and Clifford; sisters, Jean, Irene and Susan.
