Virginia Lee Mayes was born September 26, 1916 in Pryor, Mayes County, Oklahoma; one of three children born to James Hall Mayes and Sallie Pearl (Cochran) Mayes. Her favorite childhood memories were skipping rope and playing jacks. She met Ray Martin , A Federal Land Bank Manager, at a picnic in Strang, Oklahoma. They were married August 12, 1947 in Kay County, Oklahoma. They shared 40 years of marriage and were blessed with one son.
Virginia enjoyed traveling to Indian conferences in California, New Mexico, Washington D.C., and Arizona. She was a member of the Indian Women's Pocahontas Club. She obtained an undergraduate degree at Central State Teacher's College and completed her Master's Degree at Oklahoma State University. She worked as a teacher until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of the American Association of University Women. Her favorite song was "I'll be seeing you".
Virginia Lee (Mayes) Martin was inducted in to the Centenarians of Oklahoma Hall of Fame at the age of 100 years. She also received special recognition from the Cherokee Tribe. She lived 103 years and eleven months.
