'ASH-KAN DERBY' DRIVER KILLED
1,000 Witness Fatality When Car Overturns
Marion A. Hoover Of San Bernardino Pinned Under Auto

Pinned beneath his overturned car at the Ash-Kan derby, Marion A. Hoover Jr., 28 years old, a well-known San Bernardino county resident of 1118 Evans street, San Bernardino, was almost instantly killed yesterday afternoon, before a horrified crowd estimated at 1,000 persons.
Although he was rushed to the county hospital from the track, which is located on East Third street, three miles east of San Bernardino, Mr. Hoover was pronounced dead on arrival. His head had been crushed. Mr. Hoover was employed by the Harrison Reno Motor Sales Co., a distributing agency for motorcycles, and made his home with his wife, Mrs. Grace L. Hoover, and two sons, Monte Bruce, age 6, and Carl Donald, 4.
NO COLLISION
Manager Earl Wilson of the Ash-Kan derby told Barney Schallenberg of the state motor patrol and Deputy Coroner Edward P. Doyle, who was assigned to the investigation by Coroner R. E. Williams, that a collision of auto mobiles was not involved.
The accident car was one of 11 stripped down automobiles being driven in a race known as the Australian pursuit. As Mr. Hoover's car entered one of the north curves, it skidded, going out of control and turned over. The driver was wearing a steel helmet. In some manner, according to the deputy coroner, some portion of the car pressed one side of the helmet into the head of the driver.
ONLY FATALITY
The death of Mr. Hoover marked the only fatality at the Ash-Kan derby, according to Mr. Wilson, although there have been occasional accidents resulting in injuries since the opening of the track last fall.
Mr. Hoover was reared in the Rialto district, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marion A. Hoover Sr., reside at 110 Olive street. Mr. Hoover Sr. is the caretaker at Rialto Park cemetery. Also surviving are the grand mother, Mrs. Cara Hoover of Burbank, and four sisters, Mrs. Ruth Adkins and Mrs. Mary Roesch, San Bernardino, and the Misses Beverly and Laurel Hoover, Rialto. Born in Rialto, Mr. Hoover was a member of San Bernardino lodge No. 348 of Masons, the Rialto Methodist church and the Tri-City Ramblers Motorcycle club. The body was removed to the Ingold funeral home at Rialto.

When Marion Arthur Hoover was born on March 21, 1918, in San Bernardino, California, his father, Marion, was 25 and his mother, Gladys, was 27. He had four sisters. He died in July 1946 at the age of 28.

The 1940 Federal Census shows him as 22 years old, single and living at home with his mother and three of his sisters and that he had completed High school 3rd year and that his occupation was an auto mechanic. I don't know why his dad isn't listed on the census because his dad lived until 1961.
