She was born on April 30, 1930 the daughter of Floyd William and Hilda (Bell) Case.
On February 14, 1954, she married Gene Hughes in Independence, MO. He preceded her in death on October 8, 2012.
Mary Ellen was an elementary school teacher for the Pattonsburg School District. She enjoyed Bluegrass music and played the dulcimer. She read her bible faithfully and enjoyed playing cards and board games in her free time, especially with her grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, David Hughes; brothers, Floyd and Ross Case and three grandchildren.
Mary Ellen is survived by her sons, Mark Hughes, Kansas City, MO and Matt (Carol) Hughes, Pattonsburg, MO; daughter, Beth (Jonathan) Miller, Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
