Thomas Vincent Anderton, 90, a lifelong resident of Roanoke, Va. and also of Naples, Fla., passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2003. He was born October 8, 1912 in Kenbridge , Va. to Robert and Goldie Anderton.

Mr. Anderton was the retired Owner and President of Fleetmaster, Inc. and a Principal in numerous firms including Lakeside Farm (cattle farming), Fairway Investment Club, Green Hill, Inc. (meat packing), Classic Furniture, Inc. (furniture manufacturing), Viking Lanes, Inc. (bowling alley), The Salem Pirates (professional baseball franchise), The Salem Rebels (professional hockey in the Roanoke Valley, which Tom founded), Sam's on the Market, Army Navy Sales Co., The Balmoral (clothing retailer), Tenn. Steel & Forging Tri-State Mining (coal), Contract stone for Pan-American Highway (rock quarry in South America) and The Regency Towers in Myrtle Beach, S.C. (real estate development). He had numerous Directorships, including the following boards: Farmer's National Bank - First Virginia S.W., Whittier, Inc., Ferrum College, Roanoke College, Hidden Valley Country Club (where he was the founding Director and President), The Roanoke County School Board, Virginia Highway Board, Virginia Highway Users Association, The Salem-Roanoke County Civic Center Comm., The Roanoke-Salem Chamber of Commerce, and Committeeman with The Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Anderton was involved in many civic activities, including the first organized Cub Scout Pack in Roanoke (1938), founder of Youth Hockey in the Roanoke Valley, The Roanoke Rescue Mission, Cave Spring Recreation Foundation, Windsor Hills Methodist Church (finance committee), Salem Jaycees Boss of the Year (1965) and was a member of The Roanoke Valley Hockey Hall of Fame.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Walter and Floyd.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Evelyn Turner Anderton; a sister, Thelma Kanode; five children, Robert L. Anderton and Margaret, Sue Anderton Brinkley, Ernest G. Anderton and Jerri, Thomas V. Anderton, II and Shay, Michael W. Anderton; eight grandchildren, Bruce Anderton and Gina, Traci Anderton Miles, Barry Laughon and Sarah, Scott Laughon and Leigh Anne, Craig Anderton and Paige, Drew Anderton, Bradley Anderton, Susan Carter Anderton; six great-grandchildren, Maria Anderton, Addison Miles, Jessica Anderton, Meredith Anderton, Nicholas Laughon and Caroline Laughon.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday, September 5, 2003 from Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Creed S. "Bud" Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Windsor Hills United Methodist Church, 3951 Windsor Road, S.W., Roanoke, Va.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's South Chapel.
