Lusena A. Kerr, 92, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Born March 3, 1912, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Fred and Virginia Mullin Gilyeart. On Sept. 4, 1935, she married Raymond Harmison Kerr in Mount Pleasant.
Mrs. Kerr helped her husband on the farm and also was a third–grade teacher for the Mount Pleasant School District for 13 years. She lived in Winfield until the seventh grade, when her family moved to Mount Pleasant. She was a 1929 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College for two years. She and her husband moved to Winfield for 15 years, returning to Mount Pleasant in 1950, where they lived on her family's farm.
She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant for 54 years. She was a 50–year member of the PEO Sisterhood in Mount Pleasant and Winfield, along with being a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in both Mount Pleasant and Winfield. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, growing flowers and bird watching.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Robert Kerr of Paragon, Ind.; one granddaughter; and two great–grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant sisters. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be at 6:30 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Kerr will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Olson–Powell Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Winfield–Scott Township Cemetery.
