Jeff Bell was baptized at Hopewell on June 1, 1836; his father is listed in session records as Thomas Bell. He married Nancy Ann Gardner in Newton County in December 1865. They had at least four children: William (b. c. 1867); John T. (b. c. 1869); Mary Jane (b. 1871); and Lillah (b. c. 1874). He served in Company B, 53rd Regiment "South River Farmers" in CSA and was captured at Knoxville, TN in 1863. After Jeff's death his wife Nancy Gardner Bell and at least one of his children moved to the Pine Bluff, Arkansas area with Nancy's father William Bell and several of her siblings (who are all buried in Arkansas). There were a number of other Ulster Scots families in the area in Arkansas with roots in Chester County, SC.
