Thomas was the son of George and Delphia Leggitt Matthews. He was born in Richmond Co. now Anson Co. N.C. He married Mary Ann Tinkle Dec. 26, 1833 in Morgan Co. IN. They had nine children, Abraham, Isaac, Mary A., Julia A., Jacob, Edith Jane, William A., Nancy Jane, Susannah. Thomas died in Junction city, Davis (Geary) Co. KS.∼Thomas Mathews, died August 11, 1878, at his home four miles southwest of town, at the age of 73.
He came to Kansas in 1857, and was an early settler of Davis county.
